LUCKY

One of the last roles of Harry Dean Stanton in a film about the spiritual journey of a ninety-year-old atheist.

Lucky is an old US Navy veteran of rigid habits and attitudes in a small town. When his routine is interrupted by a sudden collapse at home, Lucky finds himself realizing that his remarkably healthy old age is going to face an inevitable decline and he has to accept it. In doing so, Lucky finds that his life has its positive side as he searches for some meaning that he can accept.

THE LOVERS

Playwright Tracy Letts and Aidan “Littlefinger" Gillen—in a film about infidelity and sudden passion.

Married for many years, Mary (Debra Winger) and Michael (Tracey Letts) have become alienated from each other in recent years. Mary has a lover (Aidan Gillen from Game of Thrones), while Michael dates another woman (Melora Walters), and both are on the edge of splitting up—which, apparently, will happen after they meet their adult son who wants to introduce them with his girlfriend. Aiming to appear an ideal couple in front of the girl—and break off forever straight after, Mary and Michael suddenly find their forgotten passion towards each other awakening, following a random morning kiss.

Azazel Jacobs, director of the TV series Mozart in the Jungle and Doll & Em, has made a film about infidelity without falling into theatricality or pure sarcasm. His Lovers are ethereal and at times light-headed although by no means frivolous. It is a contemplation on love, affection, and the endless search of happiness which can reveal itself in the most awkward situations, perhaps, best of all described by Madness in the song It Must be Love featured in the film soundtrack, as striking as the unexpected finale.

COLUMBUS

A “lost in translation" type of drama about the troublesome relationship between fathers and sons starring John Cho and Parker Posey.

Gin (John Cho from the Harold and Kumar comedies and the recent Star Trek trilogy) arrives in Columbus, Indiana after learning that his father, a renowned architect, has fallen into coma. Jin is Korean whose family moved to America when he was a kid. His father had always been busy at work and spent little time with Jin, who almost broke away from him as an adult. This first meeting in many years will also apparently become the last. While anticipating it anxiously in a strange city, he becomes acquainted with Casey (Haley Lu Richardson) who is an architecture lover fascinated by Gin's father's projects. In spite of leaving her home town for a prestigious college, she works in a library and takes care of mother who is having treatment for drug addiction. While walking around the city famous for its modernist architecture, Gin and Casey discuss the relationship between people and the world and gradually proceed to more intimate themes, their complicated relationship with their parents in particular.

Columbus is the debut film of the South Korean director Kogonada, who previously worked in the genre of video essay (some of his early works can be found on Vimeo).

EX LIBRIS: NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY

A documentary mosaic from the living legend Frederick Wiseman that has had a mesmerising effect at this year's Venice Film Festival.

Ex Libris is the new picture from the patriarch of documentary film Frederick Wiseman, whose works have explored the world around him for the past five decades. Having thoroughly investigated the New York's Jackson Heights district, the University of California, Berkeley, famous Paris nightclub Crazy Horse and the Opera in Paris, and London's National Gallery, the director turns his camera to the New York Public Library. Wiseman's picture is a mosaic comprising all sorts of elements, including the collection of the library's managers, children courses, a reading club where retired people discuss Grabriel Garcia Marquez, exhibitions of African painting, charity programs for the homeless, and meetings with renowned personalities (such as Richard Dawkins, Patti Smith, and Elvis Costello).

Wiseman has captured the library as an enormous organism that preserves memory about the variety of forms our world can take. Reflecting this variety and remaining accessible and comfortable for all kinds of audiences are the main tasks of the New York Public Library.

DID YOU WONDER WHO FIRED THE GUN

Documentary thriller-confession and contemplation on racism and traumas of history.

Director Travis Wilkerson travels to a small town in Alabama, where in 1946 his great- grandfather killed an African American with two gunshots but managed to escape punishment for first degree murder. Wilkerson talks to the locals about racism and other crimes then wrongly considered insignificant to our modern view. Driven by a personal story, he is aiming to understand why someone who committed murder lived a long life and is buried with a tomb, while another one was killed and thrown in an unmarked grave. The only difference is that the former was a white man, and the latter—black.

Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun? is a documentary essay raising uncomfortable questions, as if Wilkerson has interviewed the city itself whose buildings remember consistent sexual and physical violence towards African Americans. Violence that has been forgotten and abandoned in the distant past, along with the sins of the fathers. Wilkerson, however, revisits his great grandfather's grave while realizing that finding a tombstone of the murdered Bill Spann is impossible. He would see his elderly relative though—marching with a poster calling to protect the white race from genocide, which the theory of ethnic diversity represented, in his opinion. He would drive that Alabama road which is mentioned in a song about the murder of anti-segregation activist William Moore performed by the folk-rock singer Phil Ochs and talk to an African American woman who witnessed lynch-mob executions in the neighboring district. Wilkerson edits pieces from To Kill a Mocking Bird with rare interviews, family archives, views of buildings in decay, and the endless Alabama highway, documenting things or images referencing the presence of African Americans in American culture.

INFINITY BABY

Black and white comedy featuring Nick Offerman and Kieran Culkin about responsibility in the not-so-far distant future—where abortions are illegal while some babies can live forever.

Set in a faraway future in the U.S., the plot revolves around an awkward start-up initiated by Neo (Nick Offerman) which gains momentum after the Republicans forbid abortions and suggest the production of babies who never grow up. Those who had feared responsibility or the inevitable parting with their grown-up children, can now fully enjoy the pleasures of parenthood with very little effort: the babies only have to be given special pills at certain times. The Infinity Baby staff, meanwhile, themselves resemble babies: Ben (Kieran Culkin) is looking for "that special girl"— but backs out when the potential candidates mention family. His mates Larry (Kevin Corrigan) and Malcolm (Martin Starr) are even more infantile.

This sardonic comedy about a generation which rejects the idea of growing up and taking responsibility, is a new work by independent director Bob Buyington (7 Chinese Brothers, Somebody Up There Lies Me), also known as actor of indie and mumblecore movies, including Hal Hartley's Ned Rifle, Andrew Bujalski's Beeswax, and Alex Ross Perry's The Color Wheel.

GOLDEN EXITS

Adam Horovitz, Emily Browning and Jason Schwartzman in a mumblecore about hopes and family life from the director of Listen Up Philip.

Looking for new experiences, 25-year-old Australian Naomi (Emily Browning) comes to New York where she only knows her childhood friend Buddy (Jason Schwartzman), who is now a married man. Soon afterwards she also meets Nick (Adam Horovitz, from The Beastie Boys), who is looking for an assistant for his work on the archives of his deceased father-in-law. Nick is married to psychoanalyst Alyssa (Chloë Sevigny) but has cheated on her on a number of occasions. Alyssa is distrustful about the new assistant as the latter's arrival animates life in a quiet Brooklyn district where everyone knows each other. This young and single girl with no broken dreams behind her involuntarily becomes catalyst for the internal conflicts between Nick, Buddy, their wives, and sisters.

Author of Listen Up Philip and Queen of Earth, Alex Ross Perry's new work has already been tagged "Bergman in Brooklyn" by the critics. Golden Exits is an ironic yet sincere story of people with different characters and mindsets. Typically for a mumblecore, the narrative itself is more important than the dramatic development of collisions. Perry repeatedly scans the faces of his numerous characters (also featured in the film are Mary-Louise Parker from RED and Lily Rabe from American Horror Story), minimizing the distance between the viewers and the protagonists.

UNREST

A documentary about the life of a girl with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome entered the life of the 24-year-old Harvard Ph.D student Jennifer Brea not long before her wedding. In the beginning, she was still able to attend classes, but soon she had to switch to a bed regime supported by relatives, her husband Omar Wasow, Oprah Winfrey's consultant, founder of the Blackplanet social network, and an Internet-analyst. After a year spent in bewilderment and pain, Brea decided to make a documentary about her disease that includes her dialogues via Skype with functional disorder specialists and people whose life has also changed because of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Unrest is something in between a video diary and drama about a person who was able to adapt her life and the world around to new conditions. In 2014, The Root magazine included Jennifer in its list of 100 most influential African Americans. Her activity has also instigated the the #MEAction activist movement.
